Don’t Be a Scumbag (And Other Advice I Can’t Believe I Have To Tell You)

Don’t be a scumbag.

Don’t steal content from my blog and pass it off as your own. Don’t steal ideas from my blog without tell people I was the inspiration. Don’t make up lies about me or spread rumors before you verify the facts. If you do these things, you’re a scumbag. Don’t be a scumbag.

Don’t be a false friend.

Don’t tweet my links because you want me to tweet your links in return. Don’t talk over me and control the conversation. Don’t help me because you feel obligated, and don’t make me feel obligated to help you. Don’t flatter me in order to butter me up. Don’t say you read my work if you actually don’t make the time. If you do these things, you’re a false friend. Don’t be a false friend.

Don’t be a liar.

Don’t tell me your blog is extremely successful when you only have 100 visits a day. Don’t teach me your “secrets” or “ninja tips” that you’ve never actually tested but just *think* might work. Don’t pretend you’re an expert if you’ve only been doing this for a few months. If you do these things, you’re  a liar. Don’t be a liar.

Don’t be a drama queen.

Don’t act like something petty online is the end of the world. Don’t ask me for my opinion on your blog and then get upset when I give it to you and it isn’t the same thing you think. Don’t act like a mistake online is something that can’t be repaired. Don’t give too much credit to haters and idiots because that’s what they want. Don’t put me on a guilt trip or be passive aggressive toward me. Don’t act like the victim unless you truly are. If you do these things, you’re a drama queen. Don’t be a drama queen.

Don’t be rude.

Don’t think you’re better than someone else, because being smarter, more experienced, thinner, faster, or anthing else -er doesn’t make you “better”. Don’t be rude to people who email you. Don’t be funny at the expense of others and then roll your eyes when their feelings are hurt. Don’t be snarky about someone behind his/her back. Don’t troll because you think it’s fun. If you do these things, you are rude. Don’t be rude.

I honestly can’t believe I had to write this post. Let’s create a better Internet, people.

Allison, I hate it when people read something on my blog and three seconds later post a similar post on theirs. Once I got brave and confronted them and they admitted that yes, my post was the inspiration for theirs and they were just putting a "fresh" voice on it. Sorry, but all artists acknowledge their muses and journalists usually acknowledge their sources (where they can), so why do bloggers think they can be inspired and not acknowledge that source of inspiration???

I have no idea why we give more airtime to our haters than we do our fans, perhaps that's something we can change?
